News/Our Voices- Refugee Quota Submissions.
Thu Jan. 28th 2016
This year as part of a regular three yearly cycle, the New Zealand government is reviewing the annual refugee quota and will decide whether to increase the quota or not. The quota was set at 750 back in the late 1980s and it hasn't changed since then.
2015 has been the year of the global refugee crisis. The ongoing crisis in Syria has played a huge part in driving the ever growing number of refugees. At last count there were approximately 60 million people displaced around the world due to crisis or conflict, nearly 20 million of those seeking refuge outside of their own countries. Not just fleeing Syria but fleeing from other countries like Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. And until the international community acts to prevent the causes for people fleeing, the global refugee crisis will get worse before it gets better.
So have your say here. Submissions close at 5pm on Friday 5 February 2016.
