Tue Aug. 29th 2017

Former President of ASST, Dr Nagalingam Rasalingam (affectionately known as Ras) passed away peacefully at his home in St. Johns, Auckland on Saturday, August 26 at the age of 81.

Ras was a fierce and tireless worker for all refugees focusing on migrant health and re-settlement. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Auckland Refugee Council Inc (ARCI - now known as ASST) as well as the ARCI Health Centre to help traumatised refugees deal with their horrific past experiences. As a humanitarian who contributed greatly to New Zealand, Ras continued to support ASST through-out his life by facilitating direct support for asylum seekers.

Ras is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years Malar, his cherished children Ravi (wife Parul) and Rosena (husband Tony) and adored grandchildren Roshan, Saheli, Kalyani, Zaira and Saafiya. A celebration of his life will be held at Alexandra Park on Sunday September 3, 2017 starting at 1.30 pm with a private cremation to follow.
